The names Emily and Wendy are about as American as they come. The name Abeberry though? Very Basque. Wendy’s originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and married a man from the Basque Country—hence the last name—and Emily became their daughter. After moving to Biarritz, they found themselves missing a part of America that seemed to be lacking in France—American food and the infamous large portions in which it was served.
“We just wanted to make some American pastries because it’s our thing. Then the idea was to sell juices, lattes, and bigger sizes of coffee than the average coffee in France. Nothing more,” says Emily.
It’s an American-style coffee shop essentially. If you’re ever in the Basque Country and want a little taste of America, Milwaukee is your spot.
