In-home dialysis service FAQs

How does home dialysis work?

Home hemodialysis (HHD) treatments can be administered in the comfort of your home using a home dialysis machine with a dialyzer or filter that removes waste and extra fluid from your blood. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) also takes place at home, using a soft catheter placed in your abdomen to filter your blood.

How much does home dialysis cost?

Most of the medical side of dialysis is covered by insurance or Medicare. This usually includes your machine, supplies, and training—and sometimes respite care as well. Families rarely pay for these out of pocket, but you’ll need to check with your insurance about deductibles, co-pays and coverage.

Additional home support from your Helper may be paid out of pocket, usually $25–$45 per hour depending on location, experience, care requirements, and whether the shift is daytime or overnight.

What can home dialysis Helpers do?

Home dialysis Helpers, once trained on your dialysis machine, can provide non-medical support administering and monitoring treatments, providing companionship and support during recovery, and providing respite care for family caregivers. Additional services include mobility support, transportation, meal prep, medication reminders, and general in-home care.

How do I schedule home dialysis treatments?

Typically you’ll work with your dialysis clinic to determine a treatment schedule to meet your needs. Next, you can book Helpers for dialysis on the Herewith platform. On Herewith, you’ll hire your Helper and chat with them directly to arrange a schedule that works for you and make sure they have the necessary training for your treatments.

Can Helpers provide transportation to dialysis centers?

Yes, Helpers can provide round trip support to help you get to your clinic appointments and other errands. Scheduling is flexible, with one-time bookings available.
